An Investigation of Students' Awareness of School Counselling Services in Nigeria Between 2017 and 2019

This paper investigated secondary school students' awareness of counselling services in Nigeria between 20017 and 2018. The study adopted a mixed methods research approach, using a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview for data collection from 1500 secondary schools students (723= male and 777=female) in three selected South-west states in Nigeria. The results showed high awareness level of counselling services by the participants; by contrast, they preferred to seek counselling help from parents than school counsellors. The result further established that participants preferred same gender counselling. Also, all the participants agreed that school counsellors are not effective because of the mandated double roles of providing counselling services and teaching. Based on these findings, pertinent recommendations were made for effective counselling service delivery in schools.
