Beijing conference protocols on women: awakening women political consciousness in Nigeria (a case of Ebonyi State) 1999-2015
This study focused on the effects of Beijing Conference Protocols on women and the awakening of Political consciousness and Participation of women in Nigeria, with Ebonyi State as the focal point. It will examined the provisions of the Beijing Conference on women's political participation in Ebonyi State government and political parties' leadership as well as challenges posed to the realization of these protocols. It was found out that the level of Ebonyi State Government's adherence to the Beijing Conference protocols on women political participation in elective/appointive capacities in Ebonyi State has been minimal. However, the Beijing protocol had awakened women political consciousness participation in the state. To prove this fact, this paper adopted a historic and multi-disciplinary approach in tackling an exposition of Ebonyi State Government's adherence to the Beijing Conference Protocols on women and the level of women participations in politics. The research findings show that traditional stereotypes pose a challenge to the implementation of Beijing conference protocols on women in Ebonyi State. This study will not only ensure implementation of the Beijing Conference Protocols by Ebonyi State government, but as well ensure that the National Policy on Gender is achieved in line with Nigeria as a signatory to the Protocols.
