The article discusses self-efficacy and individualism among black activists opposing apartheid in South Africa and the development of the Black Consciousness movement. The author discusses how a comment by Barney Pityana, former president of the South African Students Organisation (SASO), regarding how black men were on their own reflects the self-identity of blacks. The withdrawal of black students from student organizations such as the National Union of South African Students (NUSAS) and the creation of SASO are noted. The perception of black identity as Africanism by other South African minorities and the views of black activist Stephen Biko are also commented on.
