Abstract:

Through the first two months of 2016, Boko Haram embraced suicide bombings as its primary means of spreading terror in north-eastern Nigeria, and also in Nigeria's neighbours: Cameroon, Chad and Niger. On 9 February, a pair of female suicide bombers struck at a camp of internally displaced persons (IDP) in Dikwa in Borno State, Nigeria. This attack was notable for targeting refugees, a new trend in Boko Haram's attacks, but was also a continuation of a spate of more generally targeted suicide bomb attacks carried out in late January. Hundreds of civilians were killed and injured in these attacks which featured multiple suicide bombers, often young girls.
