Abstract:

The article describes four key lessons derived from General Electric Co.'s international growth process. One is to ensure that local organizations are empowered, such as awarding profit and loss responsibility to local managers. Another is to embrace creative abrasion, ensuring that regional and global roles are clarified and decision-making frameworks are established. Building strong operational functions is crucial, so that recruitment and management of local talent can be maximized. And the elimination of strategic blind spots enables a firm to identify long-term potential of new markets and collective opportunities. GE launched its Global Growth Organization in 2011, and has grown from $112 billion to $232 billion.
