Abstract:

This book reflects the preoccupations of the OAU. There is a new chapter, on environmental law, while the chapter on economic law has been rewritten to focus exclusively on the African Economic Community. The chapter on human rights has been extensively expanded and account has been taken of domestic developments as illustrative points. The other chapters have been revised and updated. It may be that the Western Sahara dispute discussed in Chapter 2 will be resolved in the very near future. The referendum is scheduled for 2000. However, there have already been so many postponements that it should not surprise us if the millennium comes and goes without any futher progress being made. The chapter on Chad has been dropped since it had lost its topicality although information still of relevance to a broader study of the OAU has been incorporated into Chapter 1. The objective of the second edition remains the same, that is, to undertake a critical analysis, from a legal perspective, of the principal issues relating to the endeavours of the OAU.
